KAIHO // the state in between, is a collaboration between Justice in Motion and Finnish Tango band Uusikuu.
Inspired by the centenary of Finland's independence, it looks into the lives and experiences of expatriate women over the past century. KAIHO (which is the Finnish word for longing & nostalgia) investigates the very topical theme of movement across borders, at a time when more people than ever voluntarily or involuntarily move away from their home countries.
KAIHO // the state in between, combines contemporary dance with live vintage music, to explore reasons for leaving to another country, challenges of settling into a new culture, and how parallel cultural identities evolve over time. The reasons for moving and staying may have changed - the emotions, and kaiho, the very essence of longing, may well be timeless.
Our aim is to evoke thoughts & discussion on the parallels of the involuntary movement of people, that often create negative responses & emotions, and the positive & inspiring voluntary movement of people. We will offer the audience an opportunity to reflect and channel their own experiences in our multicultural community.
